The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy is the world's leading private, nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to preserving plants, animals
and natural communities. In Florida, it has helped protect more than 1.1 million acres of land, advocated and supported public
funding for conservation, and become the strongest private conservation force in the state.
Its partnerships with landowners and local governments protect the region's flatwoods, dry prairies, hammocks, rivers, wetlands
and bays for future generations. The Nature Conservancy has helped protect more than 160,000 acres for the endangered Florida
panther, Florida black bear, crested caracara and wood stork.
As part of the Coastal Conservation Corridor Project, The Nature Conservancy will help map a network of potential conservation lands
in 20 counties in the western half of the Florida peninsula, from Apalachicola south to the Florida Keys. When completed, it will serve
as a science-based blueprint to determine which lands should be set aside to maintain water quality, protect wildlife and provide
outdoor recreation opportunities.
The Nature Conservancy has enjoyed a successful conservation partnership with Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive
Lands Protection Program and has established similar partnerships in other southwest Florida counties, including a 10-year
program in Collier County that will generate at least $75 million for conservation purchases.
