LA MUSICA, a critically acclaimed international chamber music festival, will celebrate its 23nd year of presenting world-renowned performers from April 6–19, 2009. Among the events will be five concerts at the historically renovated Sarasota Opera House, pre-concert lectures, panel discussion and lecture, open rehearsals and youth activities.
In 2009, La Musica celebrates its return to the Opera House with the theme: Coming Home. The idea of Coming Home appeals to most of us, often in a rose-tinged sense, and the influence of Home is an important determinant in our daily living. It is no less true for musicians and composers, who, by necessity, lead peripatetic lives.
The programs of La Musica 2009 reflect the influence of homeland on composers from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Some, like Dvorak, always carried his homeland with him. Sadly, others, like Schulhoff, were denied a return. We also celebrate music written by composers for their musician friends, Boccherini and Schubert being prime examples who created some of the most enduring chamber music ever written. Festival 2009 will be a joyous occasion for La Musica, its musicians, and its audiences.
