Explore the South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve with enthusiastic birder and Sarasota County volunteer, Dr. Bill Dunson. Experience the preserve’s meandering trails while learning about ecological interactions in nature. The walk and talk will occur from 9 – 11 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2009.
The preserve is one of many lands that are available through Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. The preserve is home to numerous subtropical plants, as well as gopher tortoise, Florida scrub-jay, alligator and river otter.
Participants should bring binoculars, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water and camera (optional), wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat.
You may reach South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve by taking I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard). Turn left onto Englewood Road, then turn right onto Cypress Road and head west. Turn left at Mangrove Road and left again on Heron Road. Turn left onto Seneca Road; take a right onto Varet, a right on Euclid to Kenisco. Turn right to park on the Kenisco road shoulder by the cyclone fence. Please be aware of gopher tortoises at this intersection.
