Combining songs of the Musical Theatre with art songs and spirituals, you’ll enjoy music by Gerswin, Bernstein, Sondheim, Hammerstein, Kern, Arlen and more – presented side-by-side with memorable folk tunes and spirituals along with newer music by living composers. Songs from the Great American Songbook include: I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, Rhapsody in Blue, Laura, Over the Rainbow, selections from West Side Story, The Wiz, Anyone Can Whistle, and Showboat. The program includes traditional folk songs and spirituals plus new songs by Maya Angelou, Ricky Ian Gordon and Langston Hughes.
