Interact with the two creative minds behind Cork’s contemporary structure and décor Thursday, March 18th from 5:30-7PM, when architect Guy Peterson and Allyn Gallup of Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art lead a conversation on the interplay of art and architecture in a culinary space. Guy Peterson designed Cork, and Allyn Gallup supplies all the artwork seen throughout the two-story space. A cocktail hour with light refreshments precedes informal presentations by both Peterson and Gallup on Cork’s contemporary design and décor, and the influence of the contemporary aesthetic on the individual and community psyche. Cork and the Sarasota Architectural Foundation unite to host this event; the fee is $20 for non-SAF members, $15 for members. Ticket price includes a free glass of wine; a full cash bar is also available. Reservations are accessible by phone (941-388-2675) or via e-mail (info@corkonthecircle.com).
Guy W. Peterson, FAIA, is in his 27th year of private practice and has received over 50 design awards and honors for his work including 37 design awards from the American Institute of Architects. The high quality and originality of his work over an extended period of time has raised public awareness of the value of an architecture based upon honesty and simplicity. The springboard for his work has been the regional modernism of the "Sarasota School of Architecture," a recognized movement in architecture, which spanned from 1941-1966. Through his use of color, indigenous materials, light and shadow, Guy Peterson has derived a softened, Bauhaus aesthetic, which results in a clear, sustainable and delightful architecture.
Allyn Gallup established his art business in 1991 as Mira Mar Gallery on Palm Avenue in Sarasota. Since that time the name changed to Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, as its reputation continued to grow as the leading southwest Florida location to see contemporary art. He and his wife Sheila are dedicated to providing an outstanding selection of work by highly accomplished contemporary artists, most of whom have work in public collections. Paintings, sculptures, mixed media, assemblages, works on paper and prints are usually all on display. The Cork Collection is just a sampling of the extraordinary mid-career artists represented in their Rosemary District location at 1419 Fifth Street.
