Greyhounds and humans alike will be jumping for
joy at the 16th Annual Greyhound Picnic Fundraiser on November 7.
The Racing Dog Rescue Project, Inc. (RDRP) celebrates the opening of its new
Greyhound Adoption Center at an outdoor picnic, held from 11:00 AM to
3:00 PM, Saturday, November 7 at Sun-N-Fun Resort, 7125 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.
The fundraising event will feature silly greyhound contests like “best kisser” and “longest
tail,” along with a silent auction, raffle, holiday merchandise vendors and a cookout.
Admission is free and everyone is invited, but pets other than greyhounds are asked
to stay home.
RDRP’s November 7 picnic is one of several events that raise money for continuing to
build and operate the organization’s new Greyhound Adoption Center at 1801 Verna
Road. Kennels and runs were finished this summer to house greyhounds whose racing
days are over; an infirmary at the facility is devoted to caring for hounds who are sick or
injured.
“ Thanks to generous donors and the hard work of our dedicated volunteers, we finally
have a place greyhounds can call their own until we find them adoptive forever homes,”
said RDRP President Peg Murphy. “But it’s a work in progress for years to come. And
we are constantly in need of funds to purchase everything from food and medication to
soft bedding and laundry detergent.
“In 16 years of existence, we have never turned away a needy greyhound,” said
Murphy. “ But as more and more greyhounds are done racing or become casualties of
racetracks that close down, it is critical we keep building capacity. We are their last
option,” said Murphy.
The Racing Dog Rescue Project is an all-volunteer 501©3 organization dedicated to
rescuing, rehabilitating and finding adoptive homes for retired racing greyhounds
More than 1,000 retired racing greyhounds have been cared for and found adoptive
homes through the work of RDRP’s volunteers.
