Call of the Wild
You don't have to visit the deepest parts of Africa to capture the excitement of a genuine safari. Jungle explorers can hunt and capture (on film, of course) a wide variety of some of nature's most beautiful and fascinating creatures... at Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

Cool jungle trails lead you on a journey of discovery where wild monkeys chatter and alligators and crocodiles keep a watchful eye on all who walk the paths. Cast your eyes skyward and the trees present a glimpse of lemurs and wallabies at play. Gaze into the tropical lakes and ponds to view Koi (carp) and a giant tortoise basking on the bank. This relaxing rainforest holds surprises around every bend.

Sarasota's oldest attraction, the park comprises ten lush acres in the center of the county, but is far removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The land was originally listed in the city records as an impenetrable swamp; through the vision of David Lindsay, a local newspaperman, and his nurseryman friend Pearson Conrad, this virgin subtropical jungle was converted into a botanical paradise. They brought in thousands of tropical plants and trees from around the world to commingle with our native flora and fauna.

Nowhere else can you hand-feed flamingoes, get a photo with a rare parrot on your shoulder and hold an eight-foot Burmese python, all in one day. Local herpetologists consider Sarasota one of Florida's finest snake habitats, as you'll learn at the "Reptile Encounter." But don't let that discourage you from a picnic, as all of the Gardens' snakes are safely behind glass. Of course, no visit to Florida would be complete without an intimate alligator encounter. Fortunately, the park does not disappoint, as you and your family will get closer than you ever imagined.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens also provides a haven for many of our feathered friends. Not only can you mingle with flamingos and see the brilliant plumes of free-roaming peacocks, but you can also view some of our avian predators as well. The "Birds of Prey" exhibit provides insight into the important role they play in the circle of life. See the Red Tail Hawk and Great Horned Owl, and learn to appreciate the Black Vulture, as the myths surrounding this much-maligned creature are dispelled. The "Birds of the Rainforest" showcases some of the more beautiful and exotic species, highly intelligent and expertly trained to perform a variety of seemingly impossible feats. Special daily performances test your I.Q. against true some "birdbrains."

But remember, the creatures are not the only features! You'll also see rare Australian nut trees, Peruvian apple cactus, strangler figs and banana trees, as well as manicured lawns, stately palms and swans gliding across placid lakes. The formal gardens are stunning and include The Garden of Christ, featuring an inspiring display of dioramas depicting Christ's life, and the Tiki Garden, complete with an authentic Polynesian Tiki.

Even the most intrepid explorer must have sustenance, however, and the Flamingo Café offers a variety of delicious sandwiches, salads and cool beverages to satisfy any craving. The gift shop features exotic merchandise from around the world to remind you of your wilderness adventure.

More than 60 years old, this unusual attraction has withstood the test of time. Isn't it time you put on your safari hat and pay a visit? You'll be delighted to discover that it truly is a jungle out there!
